How to make & sew bra straps
There are different ways to make a bra strap but fundamentally you get the same results. I like to do it this order I’m about to show you, as if I have spare time going I can make up a batch of bra straps before I need them to save time later.
This sheet is from the bra making course session one and two, but you are free to print it out as a reference if you need it.
What you will need:
Bra strapping
Tape measure
Scissors
Rings and sliders (the sliders should be the same width as the strap and the rings can be the same or bigger)
A sewing machine set on straight or zigzag stitch
Measure and Cut the Elastic
Measure the length you want your bra strap to be. Standard bra strap lengths vary, but for a full bra strap I tend to cut the strap typically 36-40cm (around 14-16 inches) for each strap.
Cut the bra strap elastic to the desired length. Make sure to cut two equal pieces for each strap.
Attach the Slider
Slide the slider onto one end of the strap, threading up and over the bar (number two)
Fold and sew
Fold the end of the strap towards the back side of the strap, I usually fold approx 1.5cm (1/2 inch).
Sew the edge down (see pink zig zag) I usually sew back and forth, four times to ensure the the stitch is strong.
Thread strap through ring
Thread the strap through the ring (this could be a ring already on the wing or a loose ring)
The wrong side of the strap should be facing upwards towards you.
Thread strap through slider
Thread the strap back up through the slider.
You will cover the sewing loop you have previously made.
Repeat
Repeat for the other strap
Once both straps are made, double-check that they are even in length.
You can now make bra straps.
Print the picture out if you need a reminder.
If you need help with locating these items, I have linked the items I used to make bra straps (some links may be aff.links) *please note that the sewing machine differs slightly as mine is an older version.
